Obituary for Ross Owen Plymell Jr.

Ross Owen Plymell, Jr.
November 3, 1932 to August 25, 2018

Owen Plymell passed away August 25, 2018.

He was born in Brighton, CO, son of Ross Owen Plymell, Sr., and Kathleen (Johnson) Plymell.

Owen has fond memories of living in Denver during his childhood. He spoke of taking his violin on the bus all by himself from his Washington Park neighborhood to downtown Denver for his lessons as well as sledding in City Park near the Museum of Natural History.

His family later moved to Casper, WY where he often accompanied his pharmacist father to the Japanese internment camp during WWII.

The family moved again to Lead, South Dakota where Owen attended high school. He was a member of the basketball, baseball, and football teams, serving as captain of the football team and president of his senior class. During his summers, he worked in the Homestake Gold Mine, one mile underground. He also played American Legion League baseball.

Following graduation from high school in 1950, he attended the University of Colorado-Boulder where he achieved a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Studies and Education in 1954. He then volunteered in the US Army, being honorably discharged in 1956.

Owen married his wife of 60 years, Patricia Poulson in Waynesboro, VA on August 2, 1958.

Upon moving to Colorado Springs, Owen worked as a representative for GMAC until 1959 when he began his lifelong career in education. At the newly opened Wasson High School, he taught social studies and drivers education. In 1965 he transferred to the newly opened Mitchell High School. In 1967, he received his Masters Degree in Secondary Counseling from CU Boulder and became a guidance counselor. He transferred to Doherty High School in 1977 where he finished his career in 1988.

In 1969 Owen, Patricia, son Brian (age 9) and daughter Susan (age 8) began building their mountain home overlooking the Twin Lakes in CO. Doing most of the work himself, this project was dear to his heart and over the years, it developed into a year round get-away that has been greatly enjoyed by friends and family.

Owen is survived by his wife Patricia, brother Randy (Barbara) of Reno NV, son Brian (Karen) of Long Beach CA, daughter Susan (Scott) Tjaden of Colorado Springs CO, grandchildren Daniel (Candace) Plymell, Kathryn (Dustin) Peckman, Michael (Corrianne) Plymell, Andrew Goter, Julianne (Ethan) Follon, and Kira Tjaden, great grandchildren Ezekiel, Kari, and Levi Peckman. His sisters Karen Brunkhhardt and Ann Gengler predeceased him. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 2:00pm, Friday, August 31, at 1st Presbyterian Church, 219 E. Bijou St., Colorado Springs, CO 80903. A reception at the same location will follow.
